The price you pay for packing too much

by Maylynn Bloom |

Ever feel like you're blowing out your travel budget before you even board the plane?

The hidden costs of traveling can catch us out if we're not careful and one of the most common cost surprises can be extra fees at the airline check-in counter before you even start your holiday.

In 2013, excess baggage fees cost travelers $3.35 billion, according to a report by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and it looks like 2014 saw travelers paying even more.  While the total revenue from airline baggage fees for 2014 has not yet been released, figures from the first three quarters indicate that airline baggage fee revenues for 2014 will likely exceed that for 2013 and the trend is not letting up.  The first 3 quarters of 2014 saw airlines rake in $2.65 billion, with the final figure for the last quarter yet to be confirmed.  Traditionally the final quarter's revenue exceeds any other quarter, which would put the total dollar intake for extra baggage in 2014 beyond the previous year's.

Know your airline's baggage guidelines

Not knowing your airline's baggage and fee policies ahead of time can see you hundreds of dollars out of pocket before you even check-in.  Most airlines have recently tightened weight and size restrictions on luggage and imposed heavy fees for bags that exceeds the limits.  Some airlines charge as much as $200 for extra baggage at the counter!  So best to check your fare's rules and regulations regarding luggage before heading to the airport.

Don't blow your travel budget out before you even board.  Pack a Scrubba wash bag and reduce your overall luggage.  It only weights 145g (5oz) and folds up small enough to fit in your pocket.

Our $15,000 donation now has twice the impact in Bangladesh

by Ashley Newland |

Back in June, Calibre8 Pty Ltd (aka the Scrubba wash bag) donated USD15,000 to charity: water to fund the plumbing of a school water system in Bangladesh that will provide clean water and vital hygiene and sanitation training to the students and 750 people in the neighboring area.

USD15,000 becomes USD30,000

While the project isn't due for completion until late 2015, we just received an update from charity: water informing us that an anonymous donor has matched our donation, which means that USD30,000 will now go to water projects in that area, providing on-going water and sanitation for around 1,500 people in need.

Managing director of Calibre8 Pty Ltd, Ash Newland said of the project: "Our donation of USD15,000 to the Bangladesh water project was our first of many substantial charitable projects that we have planned and it was only made possible by our loyal supporters and social media fans, which is why we consider the project to be theirs.  Not only does the Scrubba wash bag help our supporters pack lighter and travel cleaner, but they know that their support helps those in need".

"For an anonymous donor to come forward and match our donation is amazing. It means that the contribution by the Scrubba wash bag (through Calibre8) will have twice the impact and assist even more people in need" Newland said.

The next project

We are pleased to announce that we are gearing up for another water project this year and details will be announced shortly.  You can stay up to date about the latest news by following us on Facebook or signing up to our newsletter.

Sending our staff packing... light

by Maylynn Bloom |

Can May (our Business Relationship Manager) fit 16 days worth of clothes into this tiny backpack?

I'm really looking forward to some much needed sun and relaxation. I won't be doing any camping or climbing this time around, as it's more of a leisurely vacation with some general site-seeing, visits to sacred establishments, a few journeys to rural areas, a bit of beach time and plenty of evening cocktail time! I'll need to travel light so I can move around freely because I'll be on the go most of the time, making my way from one end of the country to the other.

So how will I fit enough clothes to cover all occasions

and get me through 16 days of traveling

into this little backpack?

I'll need to minimize the amount of clothes I pack and plan a few washes along the way, but I don't want to waste time and money on laundry services and I definitely don't want to soak my clothes in hotel sinks, so my Scrubba wash bag is coming with me. This means I can reduce that pile of clothes shown above to the neat pile below.  I will also now have plenty of room for other essentials...

1 evening dress

2 casual dresses

3 pairs of shorts/skirts

3 tee shirts/singlets

1 nice blouse

3 sets of undergarments

2 bathing suits

1 beach outerwear

1 Scrubba travel towel

1 pair socks (mostly sandals on this trip!)

I'll be wearing long pants, a long shirt and a light outer cover on the plane ride over, which I'll wash as soon as I settle in to have on hand for visiting temples, museums or places that require a dress code and I'll do a Scrubba wash every 2 days. I've chosen separates that compliment each other in different ways. For example, black shorts that can be dressed up with the blouse or matched with a tee shirt/singlet for casual outings and my casual dresses can also dub as night/sleepwear. So you can definitely pack light and travel freely without compromising on comfort or style!

If you can guess where May's headed, you might win a Scrubba wash bag, so stay tuned for clues!
